Before joining the two boards together slotted holes should be cut into the back-up board for the purpose of mounting and adjusting the fence position on the table top with reference to the fence on the miter saw. These slots should be slightly wider than the shaft diameter of the lag screws you intend to use to mount the fence to the table. Cut a few equally spaced slots in the back-up board perpendicular (at right angle) to the fence. A 2 x 4 joist should be located under the table top centered underneath the slots in the back-up board. This will give the lag screws something solid to bite into.
This also allows you to push the tool directly against a wall for use with literally zero clearance behind it and because the saw is insanely compact (weighing only 65 lbs) its simple to use in cramped low-space work-spaces and convenient to store and transport. In place of the sliding rail interface of former saws 12 sealed ball bearings make up the GCM12SDs new enclosed system one that maintains its integrity for essentially all-time providing the smoothest blade movement and vastly better control. Because this system is also enclosed its bearings and rollers wont accumulate jobsite debris thus ensuring it remains with a glide like nobodys business for its entire life-cycle. The thing also features a glide damper allowing you to adjust the saws resistance changing the "glide" mechanism as you see fit. Built with a totally transparent lower guard the saw additionally ensures youll have completely unimpaired visibility through each cut.
There is however some variation in this so you will have to check your particular saw. If you look at your saw blade you will notice that it is wider in the middle than it is in at the bottom or the top clearly the closer to the middle of the blade you can get when you are making the cut the wider you will be able to go. Some saws allow you to go deeper than others particularly if you are using a compound miter saw. This will allow you to get another inch or so. That being said you should probably not expect to get more than six inches with a 10 inch miter saw. One thing to keep in mind is that the six inches that you get refers to a straight cut this is something that a lot of people dont think about when they are buying a miter saw. They assume that because it can cut six inches they will have no trouble cutting a 2x6 this is not however the case. If you cut a miter on a 2x6 the distance that you have to go is going to be a lot longer than six inches. If you have a 10 inch miter saw you should assume that a 4x4 is the biggest piece that you will be able to cut.
Miter saws can be used in a woodworking shop as a permanently installed tool or on the jobsite as a portable or semi-portable unit. I will discuss the construction of miter saw tables appropriate to both types of installations. The purpose of a miter saw table is two-fold: (1) to elevate the saw to a comfortable working height for the operator and (2) to provide a surface to the left and/or right of the saw for the extension of the fence and to provide support for long materials while being cut. If you have ever tried to cut a 45-degree miter at one end of a 2 x 6 x 12 you know why a miter saw table or roller stand is absolutely required. Very often miter saws are used to make repetitive cuts of the same length.
