This motion increases the blade cut capacity enabling the cut length to be longer than the blade diameter. Sliding compound miter saws also have a depth cut setting to cut dadoes into materials at a variety of depths. Sliding miter saws because of bigger capacities and more applications tend to be more expensive than the standard and compound miter saws. Blades: As one would think the price of the saw and of the blades as well tends to rise with the size of the saw and blade. Blade sizes range from eight ten and twelve inches; ten and twelve inches being the most popular sizes. Not only does the blade price increase with size but also with tooth count. It is important that you use the proper blade for each application.
Producing a virtually unparalleled smoothness of cut the tool is unbelievably precise and offers optimal operator control throughout every conceivable working condition. The new axial system completely replaces the miter saws former and comparatively underdeveloped rail system with two multi-joint articulating (or hinged) arms which appear more akin to a space-robot than a power tool. These cast-iron arms also ensure the saw remains properly aligned and calibrated despite time and unfavorable environments. Additionally the saws axial design is not only responsible for its unmatched durability and crazy-smooth precision but it also folds to sit flush with the back of the saw saving up to 12" of workspace compared with a standard sliding compound miter saw.
With the exception of Bosch miter saws whose bevel controls are conveniently up-front most saws bevel controls are placed at the back of the saw. While this is typical and more-or-less intentional it has proved less ergonomic than up-front access. Extension Wings: To increase cutting capacities some saws are also built with slide-out extension wings to support larger boards. While in theory this is a great feature unless you invest in a more expensive tool these wings are often not all theyre cracked up to be. Conversely on a more high-quality saw theyre a definitely a convenient extra.
There are three basic types available; the power miter saw compound miter saw or sliding compound miter saw. The power miter saw is a basic model that is good for a person who only intends to make simple cuts of 90 degrees or less such as the cuts necessary for trimming studs to frame a house. A compound miter saw is more versatile than the simpler power model since it adjusts for both miter and bevel cuts. Sliding compound models are more advanced and most versatile model of all miter saws. Because the motor and blade assembly is mounted on a movable arm this saw is perfect for accommodating longer pieces of wood while still performing beautiful cuts on smaller pieces as well. If the project you are doing around the house is quite extensive you might want to consider also purchasing a miter saw stand. The stand is one of the most important elements of a miter saw setup. If the saw does not have a good stable place to sit operating the machine will be frustrating and tedious. A stand will also provide a place for very long pieces of wood to rest while being cut. The purpose you intend to use the saw for will determine what type of stand you should purchase.
