Miter Saw / December 3, 2018 / Tina Abrahamsson.
When searching for high-end power tools at a low price craftsmen should also look for reconditioned tools. Reconditioned tools or recons although sometimes hard to come by are an extremely great value bringing craftsmen the highest-performance tools at a tiny fraction of regular cost. Recons for some minor cosmetic or technical defect have been returned to the manufacturer for stringent inspection and restoration processes. These tools are tested and restored to meet rigid manufacturer standards and are then re-released with a "R" trailing the model number. This little "R" (and potentially hundreds of dollars) is truly the only difference between a brand new tool and a recon. The value with these tools is truly a no-brainer; when recons are available snatch them up as an incomparable investment. Dewalts DW718R and DW716R miter saws are tremendous examples of the value of buying reconditioned.
A good saw stand will be sturdy portable easy to fold up and store and contain extension arms to support extra-long pieces of wood. Whether you are a business professional with a large work load or committed DIYer that is planning to tackle some home improvement projects a miter saw and saw stand will be an invaluable piece of equipment in your workshop. Choosing a saw and stand will be a decision that should not be taken lightly. Decide how often you will be using them what kind of projects and wood crafting you will be performing and where the saw and stand will be located. If you travel a good amount get a stand that is light weight folds up and features wheels for easy transportation. If the stand will be set up in a busy workshop look for one that is heavy duty sturdy and contains extension arms that will assist with large work pieces. Every carpenter and woodworker I know appreciates the chance to buy a new tool. In my case Id been looking for a reason to buy a compound miter saw for years. A few months ago my wife and I decided to undertake a major home remodeling project that required replacing a number of crown moldings as well as interior framing around windows.
Bosch also builds an exceptional miter saw; their 5412L dual bevel sliding miter saw is extremely powerful with large capacities and up-front controls. Although a bit heavier than some other models the 5412 12" capacity miter saw is an ergonomic wonderland with a specially designed multi-position main handle that allows craftsmen to comfortably lock into four different positions. The tool also has sliding extensions slide that come standard and make working with longer pieces of stock and lumber much more manageable if not wholly enticing. The miter also features high fences (a crowd pleaser every time) to accommodate workpieces like large crown molding. A good fence is a big benefit and this saw offers not only that but the confidence of a strong and durable tool.
Most of these miter saws are portable with blade sizes ranging from eight to twelve inches. This saw works by pulling a circular saw blade down onto a work piece in a short controlled motion the work piece being held against a fence. This fence provides an accurate cutting angle between the blade and the longest work piece edge. In a standard position this angle is fixed at 90 degrees. The primary feature that distinguishes this saw from others is its miter index that allows the angle of the blade to be altered relative to the fence. Whereas most miter saws provide a facility to make a one degree incremental change to the miter index many also provide stops that allow the miter index to be properly set to common angles of repose like 15 degrees 30 degrees or 45 degrees. Some salient features of the sliding miter saws are as under: - A compound feature allows the angle of the cutting blade to be altered relative to the cutting plane. This also allows the saw to be used for bevel cutting.
