Miter Saw / November 1, 2018 / OdeletteGervais.
I quickly realized that the tool of choice would be a compound miter saw especially when tackling the crown moldings. I had suffered through a bookcase project a year earlier using a manual miter box and back saw to produce the crown molding trim on several built-in bookcases. There was no way I wanted to repeat that experience! My wife eager to see the remodeling project underway readily agreed to a new saw purchase. A Saw By Any Other Name Miter (or mitre) saws are designed to make angled cuts in wood stock by pulling a circular blade down in a plunging motion. This action gives the saws their nicknames of "drop saws" or "chop saws." A further refinement the compound miter saw can cut both an angle and a bevel simultaneously removing the need for a "work-and-turn" motion when making an angled cut that will smoothly join to another piece of trim or molding. The double action cut is possible because the motor is attached to a pivoting post which allows the blade to swing both side to side and at an angle to the workpiece.
Make certain to turn the nut in the direction indicated on the saw as most are reverse threaded. While this area of your saw is open you should blow any lingering dust or debris. Dust will accumulate around the center of the blade which can effect the blades alignment and consequently the accuracy of its spin. You should also check the washer and mounting plate for security and for any dust or residual buildup. Simply use any standard scouring pad to remove rust or residue. General Tips: Miter Table Top: Its not only important to keep dust away from your blade its also crucial to keep dust off the miter saw table. Keeping the saw table surface clean keeps you safe and ensures a cleaner more precise cut. Its also good practice to not oil or lube the table top as you dont want any materials sliding or slipping during a cut. Essentially its important to keep the saw table surface clean but also to keep it slip free for the security of your materials and fingers. Miter Fence: A good fence is crucial for cutting accuracy.
The most portable power miter saw has a blade of eight (8) to twelve (12) inches. The power miter saws cut your woodwork in a certain motion and is against a fence where it produces an angle that is so precise. Since the birth of the first chop saw miter saws have steadily become more advanced more popular and incredibly more useful. In fact where precision crosscuts and accurate miters are concerned there is scarcely a better tool than a miter saw. Allowing users to work faster and with far greater accuracy to perform compound miter cuts bevel cuts and to work with larger pieces of material the multipurpose miter saw is a tool that little else can contest.
These precise miter cuts are made with the downward motion of a circular saw blade that spins with the power of the tools motor. There are several types of miter saw available the standard miter a compound miter and a sliding or compound sliding miter saw. The standard miter has a blade pivot from right to left to cut miters; this saw is however becoming less popular as compound miters have more applications and are only slightly more expensive. Compound miters have the ability to bevel cut or tip the blade to either the left or right side (00 - 500). Some can bevel in both directions allowing operators to miter and bevel within the same cut (-500 through 500). A sliding miter saw is just like a compound miter but with extension rods that allow the saw blade and motor to move forward and back.
