Miter Saw / November 13, 2018 / OdeletteGervais.
The greatest benefit of having a miter saw is that you can finish your work quickly and spend more quality time with your family. A miter saw (also called as mitre saw and less commonly miter box) is a mechanical tool used for making accurate crosscuts and miters in a workpiece. There are two types of miter saws commonly found. These are manual miter saw and a motorized miter saw. The first miter saw ever made in the world was a manual miter saw. It is a saw having replaceable blades suspended on rollers in a metal guide which allows making of accurate crosscuts and miter cuts. These are more commonly used in picture framing but have now been replaced by its power operated counterpart. The manual miter saw is also the sliding miter saw. The motorized miter saw which is operated on power is also called as chop saw or drop saw. It is a power operated tool that is used to make quick accurate crosscuts in a work piece. This power tool is commonly used in framing operations and cutting of molding.
There is however some variation in this so you will have to check your particular saw. If you look at your saw blade you will notice that it is wider in the middle than it is in at the bottom or the top clearly the closer to the middle of the blade you can get when you are making the cut the wider you will be able to go. Some saws allow you to go deeper than others particularly if you are using a compound miter saw. This will allow you to get another inch or so. That being said you should probably not expect to get more than six inches with a 10 inch miter saw. One thing to keep in mind is that the six inches that you get refers to a straight cut this is something that a lot of people dont think about when they are buying a miter saw. They assume that because it can cut six inches they will have no trouble cutting a 2x6 this is not however the case. If you cut a miter on a 2x6 the distance that you have to go is going to be a lot longer than six inches. If you have a 10 inch miter saw you should assume that a 4x4 is the biggest piece that you will be able to cut.
How often will you use it? What will you need to cut? Where (shop garage job site) will you work with it? and etc. Having a plan and a budget before you begin looking seriously for your miter saw will help you make a better decision. Cutting Capacity: The most popular and most universal miter saws typically offer a 10-inch or 12-inch cutting capacity. Though you will find miter saws with capacities that are both larger and smaller than this I recommend most users stay within those parameters. Across the board a 12-inch sliding compound miter saw offers the greatest cutting capacity but it will also be a more expensive heavier tool. Choosing between a compound and a sliding compound miter saw then requires a few considerations.
This motion increases the blade cut capacity enabling the cut length to be longer than the blade diameter. Sliding compound miter saws also have a depth cut setting to cut dadoes into materials at a variety of depths. Sliding miter saws because of bigger capacities and more applications tend to be more expensive than the standard and compound miter saws. Blades: As one would think the price of the saw and of the blades as well tends to rise with the size of the saw and blade. Blade sizes range from eight ten and twelve inches; ten and twelve inches being the most popular sizes. Not only does the blade price increase with size but also with tooth count. It is important that you use the proper blade for each application.
