Keeping Wrought Iron Porch Railings Rust Free

Many consumers prefer wrought iron porch railings to wooden ones because of their durability and longevity. While p

leasant to view and long lasting, an iron railing does present some unique challenges.

One challenge is removing rust and painting .Fortunately you can remove rust and paint an iron railing relatively easily by following these easy steps:

  • Wash the metal clean with a soapy mixture and hose off with water.
  • Use a soft brush or gentle chemical agent to remove any old or heavy rust. Be sure to avoid harsh metal cleansers or wire cleansers that may abrade the surface of a wrought iron structure even further.
  • Invest in some very fine sand paper and lightly sand over rusty areas until only clean, rust free metal is evident.
  • Clean posts again with water and allow to dry.
  • Use a primer paint to prime any areas formerly covered in rust.
  • Paint remaining rails and posts using a durable exterior paint designed for iron materials.

You may also consider coating railings with a material that will help prevent future rust from forming.

Protecting and Maintaining An Iron Railing In Diverse Climates

Routine maintenance will keep your metal railings in the best shape year after year. It’s much easier to maintain a railing than it is to clean and remove hardy rust. The best way to preserve the appearance of metal exterior fixtures is by preventing corrosion .Corrosion often occurs when improper drainage allows water to accumulate on surfaces and sit on features .Typically this is not a problem for railings per say, but puddles of water may affect posts and balusters in some cases.Just be sure nearby gutters and rains do not drain near your railing.

You should also clean metals periodically and apply protective coatings that will help preserve the metals luster and appearance. When cleaning be sure to use soft materials if working with cast iron or wrought iron as harsh materials can abrade and damage the metal surface.Wire brushing can be a safe and effective method for cleaning wrought iron porch railings in some cases, though you may find you need to use a grit blaster for stubborn patches of rust. Proper protective substances include lacquer and are the best measure to help maintain metal features on areas subject to heavy use or exposure.
